The use of can /could & may /might

Hello friends welcome, how are you? Friends today we will learn the use of ‘CAN’ and ‘COULD’ and may /might
So let’s start …..
                                                CAN’
The word can is used in present tense in following sense…
  1.       Power or Ability
i.                     He can lift this box.
ii.                   He can easily run a mile.
iii.                  Lisa can ding well.
  2.       permission
i.                     You can go now.
ii.                     He can go for swim this afternoon.
  3.       Prohibition
i.                    You cannot play cricket here.
ii.                  cannot depend upon him anymore.

               ‘COULD’
The word ‘could ‘is the past tense of ‘can’ and it is used is past tense sentences in following sense….
  1.       Ability
i.                    My brother could speak English when he was only eight years old.
ii.                  When he was young, he could write English.
iii.                My father could read without glasses till his last days.
  2.       Past possibility
          i.    He could have caught the train he had reached on time.
  3.       Polite request in the  present     
             i. Could you lend me this book for a day?


            ii. Could you tell me the way to the hotel?


                        May / Might
Friends we often confuse over the use of these two words. So let’s clear our doubt ….

1.       MAY’

The word MAY is always used in present tense in the following sense
1.       Permission
                                i.            May I come in?
                              ii.            May I see you tomorrow?
2.       Possibility
i.        He may come today.
ii.      It may rain today.
3.       Wish
                                 i.            May you live long!
                               ii.            May god bless you with a son!
4.       Conditional sentences
                                 i.            He works hard so that he may get good marks

2.      ‘Might’
It is past tense of ‘May’ and it is use in the following sense
1.       It is use for Possibility ( past possibility)
i.                     He said he might go to him any time.                                (past  possibility)
ii.                   The principal told us that he might see our homework. (past possibility)
iii.                  John is very weak in study. He might fail.                            ( past possibility)
2.       Permission
i.                     I asked if I might see him next day.
ii.                   He told me that I might use his bicycle.
3.       Purpose

i.                     He took medicine so that he might get well.
