Example- please keep on eyes on the dog.

7. Lame excuse- False plea

Example- he is habitual of making lame excuses whenever he is late.

8. Maiden speech- first speech from a public platform

Example- The new prime minister made his maiden speech in the public.

9. Make out- to understand

Example- I fail to make out what he said.

10. Nine days’ wonder- something that cause excitement for short time

Example- Beauty is a nine days’ wonder.

11. now and then- occasionally

Example- Every now and then he comes to troubles me with a request for loan.

12. Null and voidineffective

Example- the judge declared the election null and void.

13. Narrow escape-   hair’s breadth escape

Example- He had a narrow escape in the accident.

14. Nip in the bud- to destroy at the very beginning

Example- All the bad habits must be nipped in the bud.

15. Open secret- a secret that is well - known  

Example- It is an open secret that he is interested in the case.

16. Open Arms- cordially

Example- He was received everywhere with open arms.

17. Poison one’s ears- to say things against someone secretly

Example- He poisoned the ears of the class teacher against me.

18. Pay lip service- to show insincere respect

Example- Today people generally pay lip service.

20.  palmy days- days of prosperity

Example- After death of his father, his palmy days come to an end.

21. Pay Heed toto give attention to
Example- we should pay heed to the advice of the teachers.

22. Red letter days- an important day

Example- The 15th August, 1947 is a red letter day in the history of India.

23. Run away- to flee

Example- the thief ran away with the necklace.

24.  Square deal- a fair bargain

Example- we can’t hope for fair deal with dishonest person.


25. Scot –free - free from punishment

Example- the thief was released scot- free by the judge.

26. Spick and span- neat and clean

Example- A restaurant that looks spick and span attracts more customers.

27. Sum and substance- gist, reference

Example- you are asked to write the sum and substance of this passage.

28. Screw loose- some mental defect

Example- He always talks nonsense; there is a screw loose in him.

29. safe and sound- safe

Example- In the train accident, all the passengers were safe and sound.

30. Short cut- an easy way

Example- there is no short cut to get success In life.

31. Summer friends- friends of happy days

Example- we should never depend upon summer friends.

32. To take advantage of- to get benefit from

Example- it’s not good to take advantage of the weakness of your friends.

33. To take heed- to be careful

 Example- we should take heed of our health.

34. Time and Tide- course of time

Example- time and tide wait for none.

35. Ups and Downs- rise and fall

Example- I have seen many ups and down in my life.

36.Wild goose chase- a fruitless attempt

Example- it was wild goose chase to expect any help from John.

37. Weal and woe- prosperity and adversity

Example- good books are our real friends in weal and woe.

38. with zest and zeal- with great fervor

Example- the young people should do every work with zest and zeal.

39. White elephant- very expensive but little useful

Example- A car is a white elephant for middle class family.

40. Win over-   convert to friendliness

Example- He has won over many of his opponents to his party.
